Organ harvesting – the truth about this ritual.
We’ve been told it’s illegal to buy and sell human organs but if you follow the money, the picture looks very different.
According to the Code of Federal Regulations (Section 413.402), hospitals are allowed to acquire organs from other hospitals or organ procurement organizations—often at steep costs.
For example, estimated prices can reach $50,000 for a kidney or $100,000 for a liver. And that’s just the beginning.
When you include the cost of transplant surgeries, lifelong immunosuppressive drugs, follow-up care, and hospitalizations, the total price tag skyrockets. In the U.S. alone, organ transplantation generates an estimated $30 billion annually.
So while the public is told that organ sales are illegal, a highly profitable system operates in plain sight, just under different terminology.
It raises important ethical questions: Is this about saving lives, or sustaining a business model? And more importantly, are donors and recipients truly informed about the financial incentives driving this system?
