An event that became one of military history’s gravest ongoing coverups took place on 8 June 1967 — the day that the USS Liberty, a minimally armed, clearly American-flagged technical research vessel, was assaulted by the air and naval forces of Israel in international waters. The deadly bombardment with missiles, napalm and torpedoes in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Six Day War lasted two hours.
To convey the enormity and supreme significance of this unprovoked attack carried out by ‘America’s greatest ally’, UK Column’s US Correspondent Mark Anderson interviewed USS Liberty surviving crew member Phil Tourney, who, at the time of the attack, was a Petty Officer Third Class (E4) Shipfitter.
