Eugenie Verney Remembers Journalism | UKColumn

UK Column is delighted to have the opportunity to interview Eugenie Verney, a former journalist who has worked at many of the major titles in the UK. Born to atheist, socialist parents, and coming from a left of centre home, Eugenie regards herself as hard-wired to the left. She dropped out of A-levels to join Labour’s left-wing Tribune as an editorial assistant, and her subsequent extensive career was then to take her on a varied professional road through the UK’s fourth estate. Her work and journalistic experience has included Stanley Kubrick’s office, Morning Star, The Guardian, a short spell with Grenada TV, and later various roles including with The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, Sunday People, Express, and ultimately The Press and Journal in Aberdeen.

In a final job change, Eugenie worked as the corporate communications officer for Aberdeen City Council. It was a job that she describes as an interesting change, with the opportunity to see things from the ‘other’ side.

To the present date, Eugenie is still operating a successful self-employed media business, and she remains an elected life member of the National Union of Journalists. Eugenie is a vaccine sceptic and considers herself ‘politically marooned’. Instinctively still one to fight for the underdog, she has not, and never will, vote Tory (and certainly not Reform). She also states she cannot see herself ever voting Labour again either, or for any of the remaining uniparty iterations, because once seen none of it — absolutely none of it — can ever be unseen. Eugenie is an enthusiastic UK Column viewer, and we are delighted to share her story.
