The Book of the Dead, stretches back far back in history, possibly even to prehistoric times. It contains numerous scriptures involving death and the underworld. The topics are wide-ranging, including texts chanted by the kin and priests for the dead during the night vigil, spells used by embalmers and craftsmen when handling the corpse, incantations recited by priests during funerary rites, declarations listing the names of each item accompanying the deceased to restore his life, passwords and code signals offered by the deceased to certain gods and spirits, prayers guiding and urging the dead to enter into the prayers to the gods, praises exalting the great grace and virtue of various gods, the dead person’s confession that he has not committed any fault, and so on.
