Alan Watts – The Stream of Life

“Flow with Life” – Alan Watts on Surrender & Strength 🌊✨

Struggling against life’s currents only leads to exhaustion. Alan Watts reminds us that true power comes from going with the flow—aligning with life’s natural rhythm rather than resisting it. This wisdom, deeply rooted in Zen and judo, teaches us that surrender is not weakness, but the key to effortless action.

💭 “The whole force of the stream becomes one with your own body.”

Let go, trust the current, and discover the strength in surrender. 🌀

Original Transcript from this Alan Watts talk – ‘The Void’ in his Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life video series.

“Going with the stream of life and not trying to resist the stream… just as, for example, if you were actually swimming and you got caught in a strong current, if you try to swim against it, you’re perfectly sure to drown. But you have to learn in that situation to turn round and go with the stream, let it carry you. And then in that moment, you and the stream become one. The whole force of the stream becomes one with your own body. And you learn after that how to use the force of the stream to edge to the side and get out of it in that way. This, of course, is the philosophy of judo, of the gentle way, a philosophy of self-defense, in which Zen Buddhism has had a great influence.”

“Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Eastern disciplines for the contemporary West, Alan Watts had the rare gift of ‘writing beautifully the un-writable’. Watts begins with scholarship and intellect and proceeds with art and eloquence to the frontiers of the spirit. A fascinating entry into the deepest ways of knowing.” — Los Angeles Times
