Patterns of Death in Relation to Covid-19 Measures: Prof Martin Neil, Statistician

A pandemic would reasonably be expected to cause a significant increase in the mortality burden in the general population. It has been claimed by Western governments that the Covid-19 pandemic met this definition. This talk challenges the claim by examining the changing pattern in mortality during the Covid-19 event. A special emphasis is made on how mortality patterns changed in Scotland during the period 2020-2021 (the first lockdown and local restrictions) but before the roll-out of the vaccines (the Covid-19 measures). The mortality impact on care homes, hospitalisations, and deaths at home are investigated. Changes in medical practice, virual testing, and death coding are identified as the primary drivers of increased mortality. The talk concluded that there was no pandemic caused by a novel, deadly virus.
