On Supporting Israel: Scripture Over Statehood Part 1
Summary:
As Christians, our support of Israel should be based on the Word of God. I have made clear that I do not support Zionism, but does that mean I don’t support God’s people, Israel? If one is anti-Zionist, does that make them antisemitic? Anti-Zionism is opposition to Zionism, which is the political movement that supports the establishment and preservation of a Jewish homeland, specifically in Israel. Someone can be anti-Zionist—criticizing Israel’s policies, its existence as a Jewish state, or the idea of Jewish nationalism—without necessarily hating or targeting Jewish people as a group. Many faithful Christian and Jewish people reject the idea that God was behind the formation of Israel in 1948. Antisemitism, on the other hand, is prejudice, discrimination, or hostility explicitly directed at Jewish people based on their ethnic or religious identity. It’s broader and more personal than a political stance, often rooted in stereotypes, conspiracy theories, or historical bigotry—context matters. There are ultra-orthodox and faithful Torah Jews who feel the modern state of Israel is a cause of increasing antisemitism. What do the Scriptures tell us?
Notes:
Antisemitism vs Anti-Zionism
There is no doubt that antisemitism exists and that Jewish people wrongly get blamed for many things. There is a satanic global elite trying to destroy humanity. Both Gentiles and those who call themselves Jews are in this satanic elite. These people in positions of power who identify as Jewish are not truly Jewish according to the Scriptures. The elites have a hand in every modern nation-state, including Israel. One can criticize the policies of the US, Russia, or China, but when you criticize the policies of modern Israel, you might be accused of antisemitism.
The confusion arises because Israel is tied to Jewish identity for many, so anti-Zionist rhetoric can sometimes veer into anti-Semitic territory—intentionally or not. For example, if criticism of Israel relies on tropes like Jewish world domination or denies Jews self-determination while affirming it for others, it can cross that line. But conceptually, you can oppose Israel’s existence or actions (anti-Zionism) without hating Jews (antisemitism). Plenty of Jews themselves are anti-Zionist, like the aforementioned ultra-Orthodox groups, and they’re not anti-Semitic.
One can support Jewish people as a group—valuing their culture, history, and rights—while criticizing the modern Israeli government’s policies toward Palestinians without being anti-Semitic. It’s a stance that separates a state’s actions from a people’s identity. Jewish voices often hold this view, too. Groups like Jewish Voice for Peace or intellectuals like Noam Chomsky condemn Israel’s treatment of Palestinians while affirming their own Jewish identity. They’d say Zionism, as implemented today, has drifted from its original ideals into something oppressive, and calling that out isn’t anti-Semitic—it’s pro-justice.

Takeaway:
Christian support and zeal for Israel comes from a good place—wanting to honor God’s promises. I get why Christians back Israel, but Jesus and Paul show us God’s bigger plan. It’s not about a nation’s borders; it’s about faith in Christ. We can love Jewish people and trust God’s restoration without tying it to a government that doesn’t follow Him. If we believe what is written, we can be pro-Jewish and pro-promise, and we can reorient Zionism around Christ, not a flag.
Lord willing, next week, we will continue with Part 2 of Supporting Israel and dive into the olive tree and God’s restoration of His nation Israel.
