The Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday that COVID-19 antigen tests may be significantly less able to detect Omicron, the rapidly escalating variant of COVID.
The recent warning is based on early research from the National Institutes of Health’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics initiative using samples from patients with live viruses – survey that “represents the best way to evaluate true test performance in the short-term,” as stated by the FDA.
On Tuesday, the FDA stated that the “early data suggests that antigen tests do detect the Omicron variant but may have reduced sensitivity.”
The existence of numerous mutations in the Omicron variant of the virus has led to an increased possibility of it evading the defense against COVID that was achieved through vaccines and treatments of the likes of some monoclonal antibodies.
The FDA has found that the presence of mutations in the virus may reduce the effectiveness of the test depending on the variant sequence, the design of the test, and the rampancy of the variant amongst the population.
Many popular home antigen tests are designed to be used in series – that is, people need to do two tests on different days – to get results that are more accurate.
The FDA reiterated its proposal that people should “closely follow the tests’ instructions,” adding that if people had a negative antigen test but showed COVID-19 symptoms or posses a “high likelihood of infection due to exposure,” a molecular test should be sought out and done to confirm the result.
“Although the data is preliminary, the FDA believes it is important to share with the public,” FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Caccomo told POLITICO. “We will continue to keep the public informed if additional information comes to light.”
The latest NIH data arrived merely a few weeks after a separate NIH study on heat-inactivated samples of Omicron showed that antigen tests were able to perceive the Omicron variant “with similar performance” to other strains of the virus.

Numerous courts around the world have determined the use of RT-PCR for detection of SARS-COV-2 as unreliable and downright fraudulent.
A Portuguese appeals court has ruled that PCR tests are unreliable and that it is unlawful to quarantine people based solely on a PCR test.
Similarly, the Austrian court has ruled that PCR tests are not suitable for COVID-19 diagnosis and that lockdowns has no legal or scientific basis.
Then an Austrian parliamentary member exposed the defectiveness of the government’s COVID-19 tests by demonstrating in the parliament how a glass of Coca Cola tested positive for COVID-19.
Even the World Health Organization (WHO) itself took a u-turn and changed its PCR test ctiteria cautioning experts not to rely solely on the results of a PCR test to detect the coronavirus.

Earlier, the WHO’s testing protocol was even questioned by Finland’s national health authority. WHO had called on countries to test as many patients as possible for coronavirus.
In a startling disclosure, Finland’s head of health security, Mika Salminen dismissed WHO advisory saying the WHO doesn’t understand pandemics and that their Coronavirus testing protocol is illogical and doesn’t work.
