Amateur archaeologists working in Poland’s Grodziec Forest District have made an extraordinary discovery that has captivated the archaeological world. A stunning 5th-century Gothic gold necklace, weighing an impressive 222 grams, emerged from a ceramic pot buried over 1,500 years ago. The remarkable find represents the first example of a Gothic torc discovered in Poland, offering unprecedented insights into the Migration Period and the cultural exchanges that shaped early medieval Europe.
The discovery unfolded during a remarkable five-week period this summer, when the Denar Kalisz Group, working in cooperation with the Voivodeship Office of Environmental Protection in Kalisz, uncovered not one, but three extraordinary treasure hoards in the quiet woods near Kalisz. Their systematic exploration began in early June with the discovery of a Roman-period burial ground linked to the Przeworsk culture. Among the finds was the grave of a warrior, complete with a spearhead and shield boss, providing valuable context for understanding the region’s complex cultural landscape during antiquity.
