Selenium Deficiency: The Silent Disruptor of Health
Selenium is an essential trace mineral critical for human health, yet many people are unknowingly deficient due to soil depletion, poor diet, and modern agricultural practices. While it’s needed in only small amounts, its impact on the body is profound.
When selenium levels are low, the risk of developing various health issues rises significantly. Deficiency has been linked to:
Thyroid disorders, particularly Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and hypothyroidism
Cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s
Cardiovascular issues, including an increased risk of heart disease
Fertility problems, particularly in men due to its role in sperm motility
Increased oxidative damage, which contributes to aging and chronic diseases
Modern monocropping and industrial farming have significantly reduced selenium content in the soil meaning even a seemingly healthy diet may not provide sufficient levels.
Processed foods further strip away trace minerals, compounding the problem.
Supplementing with selenium either through high-quality food sources like Brazil nuts (in moderation), sardines, or targeted supplementation from shilajit can help restore balance and protect against deficiency-related conditions.
Your health depends on minerals that modern life has stripped away. Understanding and correcting selenium deficiency is one small but powerful step toward long-term vitality.
